On my website, I am supporting the Internet Radio Day Of Silence by blackening my website for today, June 26th, 2007.
Why am I doing this? I am doing this because the royalty rates that webcasters (all of them, not just the small guys) pay to the RIAA (a payment that terrestrial radio DOES NOT
have to pay) will rise exponentially July 15 and be retroactive to Jan
1, 2006 if nothing is done to change this. Therefore, a group of
lawmakers have come together to sponsor the Internet Radio Equality Act
in both the House and Senate. Please, call your Congressperson and
Senator and tell them that you, as their constituent, want them to
sponsor the Internet Radio Equality Act bill.
Should this bill not pass and rates do jump many webcaster, from the little guys to the big guys
will be forced to pull their streams off the internet because they will
not be able to afford their payments, which in some cases could be more than 100% of their income.
By losing internet radio, we’ll have lost an alternative source of
media and an important outlet for alternative voices, opinions, music,
etc. So please, do as asked above, and write your
Congressperson/Senator and make sure they sponsor the bill.
